It was only a matter of time before, Sanlúcar de Barrameda was given the dazzling recognition it deserves.

SANLÚCAR DE BARRAMEDA – MORE THAN JUST MANZANILLA

The Gourmet capital of Spain 2022 is SANLÚCAR DE BARRAMEDA !  This historic seaside town, only 50 minutes from Vejer, is one of my favourite places on earth. And not just because it’s the home of my beloved Manzanilla Sherry but also because of the joy and warm hospitality of the Sanluqueños. It’s also a food lovers paradise so it’s little wonder that in 2022 Sanlucar de Barrameda is the Gourmet Capital of Spain.

PERFECT FOOD & WINE PAIRING

For years I’ve been taking people to Sanlúcar to enjoy one of the best food and wine matches in the world – Tortallitas de Camarones & Manzanilla. This is a pairing also appreciated by chefs such as Rick Stein, Jose Andres & Frank Camorra!

Not forgetting the juicy sweet ‘langostinos’ de Sanlúcar and the very best potatoes you will ever taste. These massive potatoes grow so big in size because of the less compact sandy soil – ‘Patatas con sabor de Manzanilla’  In Sanlúcar you will never forget simple ‘patatas aliñadas’, (a dish of boiled potatoes, mixed whilst still warm with delicious extra virgin olive oil, sherry vinegar, sweet onion, parsley & salt), and plates of boiled sweet langostinos and crispy tortallitas, all washed down with a bottle of perfectly chilled Manzanilla.

For years people have been seeking out Sanlúcar to indulge in truly spectacular, yet simple feasts of Sanluqueño homegrown delicacies. Just about every dish features Sherry; potatoes, peppers and onions with a glistening sea bream atop is splashed with Manzanilla, ‘Cazon’ (dogfish) cooked in tomato & Manzanilla sauce – totally simple yet spectacular.

Sanlúcar is now home to some really fabulous white wine made using 2 of the 3 Sherry grapes,  Palomino & Moscatel. Boutique wineries such as Muchada Lecapart are gaining recognition from wine writers such as Jancis Robinson.

Recently Peter Sisseck invested in the area, believing that here he can make a white wine to match is highly respected Pingus.

On the 6th of September this year, Sanlúcar will also celebrate in the 500th anniversary of the return of Magellan’s first circumnavigation of the world, under the command of Juan Sebastian El Cano.
