— What to expect

Although I’m here in the south of Spain, my heart is in my homeland of Scotland which is why I’m so excited that I’ve teamed up with my buddy Sally Macdonald to offer you this fabulous Culinary Tour of Scotland. May is one of the best months to visit the Highlands of Scotland, in particular the glorious West Coast – no midges are present at the beginning of May. The rhododendrons are flowering, the trees are coming into leaf, lambs and calfs skipping around the hills – all giving a general ambience of excitement that winter is truly over and that spring has sprung.

One of the reasons I feel so at home in Vejer is that it reminds me of my homeland in many ways. Wonderful people, charming villages, beautiful beaches, interesting history, great local produce and where Vejer has Sherry, Scotland has whisky. The historic tie in between Sherry & whisky endures to this day, the majority of whisky being aged in Sherry casks from Jerez. My own family, the Manson’s of Glen Garioch, imported Sherry in cask from Jerez which they bottled and then matured their malt in the empty casks. The comfort of being in both places runs deep.

Who is Sally?

I met lovely bubbly Sally over 25 years ago when we were eating, drinking & reeling (that’s Scottish dancing btw!) our way around London.  She was then the Director of Operations for the renowned Firmdale Hotels group, owned by the talented interior designer Kit Kemp and her husband Tim. However for the last 25 years she has been living life in the Scottish Highlands as a “farmers wife” with her husband the archetypal Highland gentleman farmer, John Macdonald.

Sally has many fingers in many pies which includes mentoring small businesses in hospitality.  She works on the farm and entertains royally in their beautiful Georgian farmhouse, especially during the stalking season.  It’s thanks to her local knowledge & connections that she has facilitated this exceptionally bespoke Foodie Tour.
