Behind Annie’s Kitchen Door

Annie B

A certified Travel Agent and qualified Sherry Educator, Annie ran her own successful catering and corporate hospitality company in London for 15 years before falling for and deciding to stay in Vejer.

Passionate about food, wine, and Spanish culture Annie leads her tours with the acuteness of a non-native, an eye for attention to detail, and genuine enthusiasm for her subject. She specialises in cookery classes that maximise taste and minimise fuss and tours that are fun and indulgent, all the time celebrating the aspects of the country that originally drew her to Andalucia.

Since becoming a travel agency in 2010, Annie now offers accompanied food and wine tours of Cadiz province, Menorca, Morocco, Portugal & Scotland.

Annie was hugely proud to be honoured by the town of Vejer in September 2013 as a ”Vejeriaga de Adopcion” in recognition for the attention she has brought to the local gastronomy.

She is fluent in English, Spanish, and Sherry

Annie’s Spanish Kitchen

Annie cooks out of Casa Alegre, her home and the official centre for Peña Gastronómica de Vejer – The Gourmet Association of Vejer. The house, set within the old town of Vejer was completely refurbished in 2003, transforming a centuries old Andalucian patio home for 5 families into the stunning residence it is today. The azotea (roof terrace) is where everyone gathers to relax, have a pre lunch or dinner drink and relish stunning 270-degree views from the east to the south west, over Vejer and over the Strait of Gibraltar towards North Africa.

If the azotea is the house’s crowning glory, Annie’s kitchen is its heart. Whilst retaining many original features, it is sleek and contemporary, colourful with Spanish and Moroccan pottery, flooded with sunlight and features the best 21st-century equipment. The kitchen remains cool during the warmer months due to the vast thickness of the walls of the house.

Culinary Tour of Morocco

Tara S, London, October 2019

I want to say thanks so much for a fabulous trip, I had such a brilliant time.  The cities were all so different and fascinating in their own ways, the riads we stayed in were beautiful and full of character.  I do think having the last place to ourselves was very special, especially the breakfasts on the roof terrace. I had so much fabulous food over the nine days but for me the cooking class at Tara’s was a highlight as she took the classic dishes and gave them really interesting twists.   Thanks so much for everything you did to make this a trip of a lifetime.

Why Vejer de la Frontera

It’s breathtakingly beautiful. Your first glimpse of the town is as a blinding flash of white on a hilltop against the bluest of blue skies. Up close it’s just as easy on the eye, too – a labyrinth of narrow, cobbled streets winding its way between quiet squares, churches and handsome historical buildings, it’s a photographer’s dream.
